Nigerian skitmaker and Mr Macaroni says a dark chapter in his life gave him the strength he never thought possible.
The popular comedian, who faced arrest in February 2021, spoke out about the brutal police treatment that left a lasting impact on his fight for justice. The arrest happened at a protest against the reopening of the Lekki Tollgate, months after the October 20, 2020 #EndSARS massacre—a raw wound for many Nigerian youths who had rallied for an end to police brutality.
In his conversation with Chude Jideonwo, Macaroni peeled back layers of pain, sharing how officers stripped him naked and inflicted suffering to break his resolve. But instead of fear, he came away from that ordeal with a renewed determination to stand for the voiceless.
“I feel I should be involved because God has given me the platform today, not to be popular, but so that I can use the platform to speak up for those that cannot speak for themselves. How can I ask others to make sacrifices that i am not willing to make.
“All the fear in me disappeared after that experience. That is the twist. It was after these guys tortured me and I saw the hate in their eyes, and how angry they were.
“The skit I made doesn’t do justice to what I experienced. I had to do it so that people could watch. I was completely naked. They stripped us naked and I was molested. They were happy and mentioning names. They were saying I was disturbing some people.”
