Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle admitted his team made some errors but maintained they were the better side after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in their World Cup qualifier.
Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered another setback as the result left them fourth in Group C with just seven points, trailing leaders South Africa by six points.
“We made some mistakes, but we were the best team on the pitch. This is football. It’s difficult to analyze the game right now, but we’ll review it later,” Chelle said during the post-match press conference.
The Super Eagles took the lead and pushed for a second goal but failed to convert their chances, allowing Zimbabwe to score a crucial equalizer.
Despite defensive lapses, Chelle refused to blame his backline, saying, “I don’t want to blame the defenders. The whole team is responsible for the result.”
With qualification now in doubt, Nigeria must produce a strong turnaround in their remaining matches to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
