Boxing icon Tyson Fury has announced his retirement from the sport.
According to Fury, this comes after the back-to-back defeats from Oleksandr Usyk, the undisputed heavyweight champion.
Fans had been speculating about Fury’s next move, with many hoping for a third bout with Usyk or a much-anticipated fight against British rival Anthony Joshua.
Joshua, had in fact, insisted over the weekend to lock horns with the heavyweight boxer this year.
Joshua, speaking at The Ring Magazine Awards last week, said “It has to happen this year.”
However, Fury, known as the "Gypsy King," has decided to step away from the ring, closing the chapter on a solid career.
In an Instagram video shared on Monday, Fury addressed his fans, saying: “Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it. I’m going to end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side.”
In his post’s caption, Fury added, “Thanks, it’s been a blast. Thanks to everyone who helped out along the way! Happy new year. Jesus is king now and forever.”
Fury has had two encounters with Usyk. Their first fight in May last year ended in a split-decision loss for Fury, marking his first professional defeat. The rematch in December saw Usyk claim a unanimous decision victory.
