Golf legend Tiger Woods has pulled out of this week’s Genesis Invitational, saying he is “just not ready” to compete following the recent death of his mother, Kultida Woods.
Woods had initially committed to playing in the tournament, marking what would have been his first professional event in seven months. However, on Monday, he announced his decision to withdraw, stating that he is still processing his loss.
“I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready,” Woods said in a statement on social media. “I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss. Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my Mom’s passing.”
The 15-time major champion was set to compete in his first non-major PGA Tour event since last year’s Genesis Invitational, where he withdrew after one round due to illness. His last professional appearance was at The Open Championship in July.
Woods struggled through the 2023 season, finishing 60th at the Masters and missing the cut in the other three majors. His ongoing recovery from leg injuries sustained in a 2021 car accident, as well as back issues that led to another surgery in September, have continued to limit his play.
Despite his setbacks, Woods returned to the course in December, teaming up with his 15-year-old son, Charlie, for the PNC Championship family event in Florida. He also participated in the newly launched TGL indoor simulator league alongside Rory McIlroy.
The 49-year-old has a strong history at Torrey Pines, where he has won eight times, including his iconic 2008 U.S. Open victory in an 18-hole playoff against Rocco Mediate.
The Genesis Invitational is typically held at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. However, due to recent wildfires affecting the surrounding community, organizers opted to relocate the event this year.
Woods has not yet announced when he will return to professional competition.
