Nigerian artist Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, is currently detained following his arrest on November 27, 2023, during a performance in Owerri, Imo State. His detention is reportedly linked to a verbal altercation with Afrofusion artist Burna Boy.

On December 23, 2023, Justice Liman of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the police to either charge Darlington within 48 hours or release him unconditionally. Despite this directive, Darlington remains in custody. His legal representatives from Deji Adeyanju and Partners have expressed readiness to comply with the bail conditions set by the court. In a letter dated January 8, 2025, addressed to Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Galadanchi, at the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) in Abuja, the law firm confirmed their intention to present a surety to fulfill the bail requirements.

The arrest stems from Darlington’s public criticism of Burna Boy’s association with American rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is facing serious allegations. Darlington’s attorney, Deji Adeyanju, has confirmed Burna Boy’s involvement in the circumstances leading to his client’s arrest.

The legal team has reiterated that Darlington’s continued detention is unlawful and is actively working to secure his release by meeting the imposed bail conditions.
