UEFA has announced that the 2027 Champions League final will no longer take place at Milan's San Siro Stadium due to uncertainties surrounding potential renovations.
The city of Milan was unable to guarantee that the stadium and its surrounding areas would remain unaffected by proposed refurbishment works, leading to the decision.
Both AC Milan and Inter Milan, who share the iconic venue, recently rejected plans to modernize and restructure the stadium, which is owned by the city of Milan. The Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, indicated that the two clubs might revisit their previous plan to build a new stadium nearby. The project had been shelved last year following political and bureaucratic hurdles.
AC Milan has already made moves to secure land outside the city's limits, purchasing property in the San Donato Milanese suburb earlier this year, hoping for smoother approval processes for construction. Meanwhile, Inter Milan is exploring options south of the city, particularly in Rozzano and Assago, and has also considered industrial land in the northern suburb of Sesto San Giovanni.
