Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton has disclosed that he has Igbo ancestry. During a recent appearance on the ‘Drink Champs’ podcast hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN, Banton explained that his tribe, the Maroons, trace their origins back to the Igbo people of Nigeria. He expressed concern over the Jamaican government's actions, accusing them of allowing Chinese and other foreign nationals into their region, threatening the Indigenous land and way of life of the Maroons.

Banton stated, "Our Indigenous way of life and our land are under threat from the current Jamaican government, which is bringing in Chinese and other foreign nationals to the Cockpit region, a sacred area for us. This is an attempt to displace us, the Maroons, who are the Indigenous warriors of the island. We fought the British relentlessly and are known as Blackmaroons. My lineage traces back to Nigeria, and according to my bloodline, I am an Igbo man."
