Asisat Oshoala made history in her first season with Bay FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), setting multiple records. The 30-year-old Nigerian striker scored Bay FC’s first-ever playoff goal, though the team was eventually defeated 2-1 in extra time by Washington Spirit.
Oshoala joined Bay FC in January after leaving Barcelona, and the club later added Zambian forward Racheal Kundananji from Madrid CFF for a record $860,000 fee, the highest in women’s soccer. Bay FC, the first professional women’s soccer team in the Bay Area since FC Gold Pride, finished 7th in the 14-team league, qualifying for the playoffs.
Oshoala scored Bay FC’s first NWSL goal in a 1-0 win over Angel City FC on March 18. She led the team’s scoring with eight goals this season, solidifying her reputation as one of Africa’s most prolific female strikers.
Oshoala’s record-breaking career includes domestic and international honors. She won the Women’s FA Cup with Arsenal, Chinese Super League titles, and multiple trophies with FC Barcelona. She also helped Nigeria win three Africa Women’s Cup of Nations titles and has scored 105 goals in 156 club games, winning the African Women’s Footballer of the Year award six times.
