The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, honored Afrobeats star Rema with a royal plaque during the singer’s visit to his palace on Thursday. The presentation took place just before Rema’s highly anticipated homecoming concert at the Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.

Earlier in the week, Rema joined Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Edo Arena, which will be named “Rema Dome” in recognition of the artist’s contributions.

Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City and has been an enthusiastic ambassador for Edo State, celebrating its culture and history through his music. His recent hit, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo native Shallipopi, pays homage to the city and even suggests that he deserves a medal from the Oba for his efforts in promoting the kingdom.
