New Zealand has qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating New Caledonia 3-0 in the Oceania qualifying final at Eden Park, Auckland, on Monday. This marks their third-ever World Cup appearance, following previous qualifications in 1982 and 2010.

Despite the win, the All Whites suffered a setback as their captain and Nottingham Forest striker, Chris Wood, left the game with a suspected hip injury. Wood, who has scored 18 Premier League goals this season, was forced off in the 54th minute after attempting a shot.

Second-Half Goals Seal the Win

New Zealand dominated possession in the first half but struggled to break down New Caledonia’s defense. However, the breakthrough came in the 61st minute when veteran defender Michael Boxall scored with a header from a corner—his first international goal.

Five minutes later, substitute Kosta Barbarouses doubled the lead with a clever chip over New Caledonia’s goalkeeper, Rocky Nyikeine. In the 80th minute, Eli Just sealed the victory with a close-range finish.

World Cup Qualification Changes

New Zealand previously had to navigate intercontinental playoffs to qualify for the World Cup but fell short against Mexico, Costa Rica, and Peru in past attempts. However, with FIFA expanding the tournament to 48 teams, the Oceania winner now qualifies directly.

Although New Caledonia’s dream of a first-ever World Cup appearance is not over, they will now enter an intercontinental playoff for a final chance at qualification.

Reflecting on the achievement, Boxall emphasized that the team’s focus is on making an impact at the tournament.

"Once the World Cup expanded, we expected this of ourselves. It’s not just about getting there—it’s about what we do when we get there," he said.
