France captain Kylian Mbappe has been excluded from the national team squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League games this month.
Coach Didier Deschamps announced the squad on Thursday.
Mbappe, who recently returned from a thigh injury, came on as a substitute in Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss to Lille in the Champions League. Despite his recovery, the 25-year-old forward will not play in France’s matches against Israel and Belgium, allowing him time to rest and regain fitness.
“I spoke with Kylian. His issue isn’t serious, but I won’t take any risks, which is why he’s not in the squad,” Deschamps explained to reporters.
France will face Israel on Thursday, October 10, in Budapest, after the match was relocated due to the Middle East’s security situation. Les Bleus, who won the Nations League in 2021, will then play Belgium in Brussels on Monday, October 14.
France currently sits with three points from two matches in Group A2, led by Italy with six points.
This is Deschamps' first squad since Antoine Griezmann, the team’s vice-captain, retired from international football earlier this week. Deschamps acknowledged Griezmann's impact but said the team would adjust without him, though he won’t be seeking a direct replacement.
Christopher Nkunku of Chelsea returns to the squad, having last played for France in June 2023, while midfielder N’Golo Kante is not included.
