Afrobeats singer and producer Maleek Berry shared a story about his early days with fellow artist Davido during their time as emerging musicians. Speaking on the ’90s Baby’ podcast, Berry, known for his hit song “Kontrol,” revealed that Davido would act as though he was from a humble background while they worked together in the same studio, despite his wealthy upbringing.
Berry recalled, “I remember when Davido only had about four thousand views on YouTube. When he visited London, I would take him to a studio in Bermondsey to record.” He explained that they connected through one of Davido’s cousins on social media, and at that time, Davido was not widely known. “We were just two Nigerian guys passionate about music who got connected. He acted like one of the kids from a less privileged background. But when I visited his father’s mansion, I was shocked. There’s a big difference between having money and having money.”
Berry continued, “I was really taken aback because, at the time, I never thought he [Davido] had that kind of wealth. He would just blend in with us. Seeing that huge house made me realize how wealthy his family truly is.”
He also mentioned that years later, Davido was the one who introduced him to Wizkid.
