Liverpool manager Arne Slot emphasized the importance of finishing in the top eight of the Champions League to avoid the extra burden of two playoff matches.

This came after Liverpool's narrow 2-1 victory over Lille on Tuesday. Despite the win, Liverpool missed out on securing the top spot in their group with a game left.

The victory confirmed Liverpool's place in the last 16 and ensured they skipped the two-legged knockout round required for teams finishing between ninth and 24th. Barcelona, who staged a dramatic 5-4 comeback against Benfica with a late goal by Raphinha, remain three points behind Liverpool with one match left in the league phase.

Slot noted that the new tournament format makes rankings less predictable, as teams' positions can vary based on their draw. He stressed the main achievement was bypassing the additional round.

Mohamed Salah scored his 50th European goal for Liverpool, and substitute Harvey Elliott secured the win in the second half after Lille's Jonathan David had equalized. Liverpool also set a club record for the longest stretch without conceding in European competition—599 minutes—surpassing their 2005/2006 record under Rafael Benitez.

Slot praised his players' quality and work ethic, attributing the team's defensive success to their attacking style rather than excessive defending. He also commended Lille for their disciplined performance, particularly after being reduced to 10 players in the second half.

Lille manager Bruno Genesio expressed frustration over the loss but also pride in his team's resilience, especially during the second half when they were a man down.
