Liverpool has reportedly reached out regarding a possible move for Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman as they prepare for life without Mohamed Salah.
According to Sky Sports Switzerland, the Reds have taken significant steps toward signing the 27-year-old Atalanta star, who has been in top form this season with 17 goals and seven assists in 29 matches across all competitions.
Arsenal has also shown interest in the reigning CAF Player of the Year but has yet to make a formal move. Liverpool, however, sees Lookman as a strong candidate to fill Salah’s role if the Egyptian leaves at the end of the season.
Atalanta Open to Offers
Lookman’s future at Atalanta has been under speculation, especially after a recent disagreement with manager Gian Piero Gasperini following his missed penalty in a Champions League clash against Club Brugge. The Italian club is reportedly open to selling him if they receive offers around €65 million (£53.8 million), with multiple European clubs keeping a close watch.
Liverpool is not alone in the race, as Newcastle United and Manchester United have also shown interest. TEAMtalk reports that Newcastle has already sent scouts to monitor Lookman, valuing his ability to play both as a winger and central striker.
Lookman’s Rising Profile
Since joining Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022, Lookman has established himself as one of Serie A’s most dangerous attackers, tallying 49 goals and 23 assists in 107 games. His reputation soared last season when he netted a hat-trick in Atalanta’s Europa League final win against Bayer Leverkusen and later played a key role in Nigeria’s run to the Africa Cup of Nations final.
The London-born player started his Premier League career with Everton in 2017 before stints at RB Leipzig and Fulham. His familiarity with English football makes him an appealing option for Liverpool.
Salah’s Uncertain Future
Salah’s contract with Liverpool expires in 2025, and talks over a renewal remain unsettled. Saudi clubs remain keen on signing him, having made a strong push for his services last summer.
Liverpool’s new sporting director Richard Hughes and head coach Arne Slot are reportedly exploring alternatives, with Lookman emerging as a prime target. His goal-scoring ability, versatility, and experience in high-pressure matches make him a strong candidate for the Reds.
Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, and Inter Milan are also monitoring Lookman, with PSG previously expressing interest in the Nigerian forward.
