Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan recently shared a unique experience from his career: directing a movie despite not understanding its storyline.

Speaking at the third edition of KAP Film & Television Academy’s Reel Circle, Afolayan recounted the challenges he faced while working on an abstract installation film early in his career.

The project began with hesitation, as Afolayan struggled to grasp the concept. “I was asked to direct something I know nothing about,” he said. “I tried to bail out but I was convinced that I could do it. But I knew I didn’t know what I was going to do. I didn’t understand the storyline.”

Despite his doubts, he sought advice and support from colleagues, including the late Biodun Aleja, who encouraged him to push forward. “I spoke to the person who introduced me to the project… she showed me her showreel and I knew there was a problem because the showreel didn’t make sense. It was a complete abstract installation,” he revealed.

The project took him across multiple countries, including the U.S., where he directed in notable locations like one of the oldest museums. Yet, even after the premieres in 2007, the storyline remained elusive to him. “Up till now, I did not understand the story. There was no story,” Afolayan admitted.

The filmmaker described the experience as one of the most challenging in his career but acknowledged the exposure and opportunities it provided. From Miami to Chicago and beyond, Afolayan navigated the complexities of abstract filmmaking while learning to adapt under pressure.
