Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla has spoken out against the bullying of Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina, a Miss South Africa finalist who recently withdrew from the competition following scrutiny over her nationality. Adetshina, a model of Nigerian and Mozambican descent, became the focus of controversy in July after advancing to the Top 16 of the Miss South Africa pageant.
Despite making it to the Top 11, Adetshina pulled out of the contest after the South African Department of Home Affairs raised allegations that her mother may have committed fraud and identity theft.
In response, Tyla expressed her disappointment over the treatment Adetshina received, stating that the model was bullied out of the competition. Sharing the news of Adetshina’s withdrawal on X (formerly Twitter), Tyla wrote: "Disappointed that this happened to her, but wish you all the best girl. Kill it!" She added, "I will always stand with South Africa, but regardless of opinions… She was bullied, and that’s what I don’t stand for."
In the wake of the controversy, Miss Universe Nigeria has extended an invitation to Adetshina to join their contest. However, she has yet to respond to the offer.
