International Boxing Federation (IBF) heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois has expressed interest in a rematch with Anthony Joshua, even as he prepares to defend his title against Joseph Parker in February.
“As a fighter, I’d love to get in the ring and finish our rivalry,” Dubois told Mirgor. “But for now, I’m focused on defending my belt. A rematch with Joshua might happen in the future, who knows? I’m just excited to continue my journey.”
Dubois knocked out Joshua at Wembley Stadium in September, solidifying his position as a top heavyweight. However, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has said the former two-time champion won’t return to the ring until at least May 2024.
While Dubois remains open to a future rematch, Joshua could explore other paths to reclaim heavyweight glory. The World Boxing Council (WBC) recently approved an interim title fight between Zhilei Zhang and Agit Kabayel, with the winner potentially facing Joshua.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman stated, “We’ve received a request to sanction this fight, and we’ve approved it. Our goal is to promote the best matchups in the heavyweight division.”
Some believe Joshua should wait for a major fight with Tyson Fury before retiring. Former champion Amir Khan advised, “He should aim for the big fight against Fury and call it a day after that.”
A potential clash with Fury could take place under the Riyadh Season banner if Fury fails to reclaim his title from Oleksandr Usyk in December. Joshua, who earned $75 million from fights this year alone, remains one of the sport’s highest earners.
With options including the WBC interim title, a Dubois rematch, or a Fury showdown, Joshua’s next move could reshape the heavyweight division.
