Earlier today, Friday 10th January, 2025, multiple reports surface that Nigerian rapper, Olamide surpassed 1 billion career streams on Spotify.
The reports noted that he is the first African rapper to achieve the feat, thanks to his incorporation of Afrobeats in his music and collaborations. But how true is this?
Checks by 9jaOnline Magazine have confirmed this not to be true. The rapper presently boasts of over 890million streams, as seen on Kworb Net, the official Spotify chart data site.
As it stands, the YBNL boss needs approximately 20million streams to claim the 1billion milestone.
Is this achievable? Definitely! Amongst others, he has a daily stream of 73,000 for his highest streamed single, Infinity which features Omah Lay and holds over 150 million streams, and has 77,000 daily streams for Amapiano which is the second most streamed song.
Meanwhile, Olamide made history last year as the first African rapper to be nominated for a Grammy.
His collaborative hit with Asake, ‘Amapiano’ was nominated in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category but lost to Tyla’s ‘Water.’
