Former Colombia footballer Jorge Bolaño dies at 47

Former Colombian international footballer, Jorge Eladio Bolaño, has died at the age of 47.

According to local reports, Bolaño collapsed at a family member’s birthday party and later died from a heart attack. The incident happened in the city of Cúcuta, and though he was quickly taken to a nearby clinic, he could not be saved.

Bolaño was well known for his football career in Europe, playing for clubs like Parma, Modena, Lecce, and Sampdoria in Italy. On the international stage, he played 36 matches for the Colombian national team and was part of the squad at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

The Colombian Football Federation confirmed his death in a statement on Sunday, April 6, and expressed deep sadness over the loss.

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Jorge Eladio Bolaño Correa. He was a former national team player, a professional footballer, and a coach who passed away in Cúcuta,” the statement read.

The football body described him as a man who gave so much to the sport both on and off the pitch. His contributions to Colombian football, they said, will not be forgotten.

Bolaño’s death has left many fans and colleagues in shock, as tributes continue to pour in for the respected midfielder who inspired many young players in his home country.
