Nigerian OAP Do2dtun has fiercely criticized South African singer Tyla following her acceptance speech at the VMAs, where she won in the Best Afrobeats category. Tyla, known for her hit "Water," took issue with being labeled under Afrobeats, despite its global success, and expressed her frustration over African artists being lumped together.
In a scathing response, Do2dtun blasted Tyla for accepting an award in a category she claimed didn't represent her, given her association with Amapiano, not Afrobeats.
"Aunty Tyla, you say you're Amapiano, but your song ‘Water’ isn't even Amapiano. If you felt wrongly categorized, why didn’t you give the award back?" he wrote. He went on to accuse her of hypocrisy, adding, "You took an award that didn’t reflect your sound, yet you’re complaining. This is why some of you are selling our birthright for peanuts."
Do2dtun’s fiery remarks have fueled the ongoing debate around genre classification and representation in African music.
