Jamaican dancehall star Spice has rejected reggae legend Buju Banton’s recent criticism of Afrobeats, where he called the genre “f*ckery.” Banton argued that Afrobeats artists focus on personal gain rather than societal issues and accused them of lacking substance and borrowing from reggae without credit.
In an Instagram Live interview with Daddy Freeze, Spice defended Afrobeats, stating, “I don’t think Afrobeats is f*ckery. It’s absurd to say that.” She highlighted that artists like Burna Boy, 2Face, and Falz address cultural and political issues in their music, challenging Banton’s claims. Spice concluded by acknowledging Afrobeats’ global success, saying, “I’m the queen of dancehall, but Afrobeats is ruling the world now.”
