Chelsea is at risk of facing a transfer ban or points deduction as the Premier League concludes its investigation into potential financial breaches under former owner Roman Abramovich. Abramovich, who owned the club from 2003 to 2022, was sanctioned by the UK government and disqualified as a director following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The investigation, prompted by the new Todd Boehly-led ownership in May 2022, uncovered incomplete financial records from Abramovich’s tenure. Reports revealed that Abramovich may have used offshore companies to make payments to agents and associates, potentially violating financial regulations. UEFA fined Chelsea €10 million in July 2023 for similar issues.
Premier League CEO Richard Masters stated, “We’re dealing with historic matters and ongoing discussions with the club about previous ownership.” He confirmed that the investigation is nearing completion but did not specify the potential outcomes, which could include fines, a points deduction, or a transfer ban.
