The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 qualifier match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Libya will not take place as scheduled for today, October 15, 2024.
This decision comes after the Nigerian team boycotted the fixture in protest of the inhumane treatment they suffered in Libya.
The controversy began when the Super Eagles were stranded at Al Abraq Airport for over 13 hours on Sunday, citing safety concerns. In response, the Libya Football Federation condemned Nigeria’s decision to withdraw from the fixture, accusing the Nigerian Football Federation of failing to cooperate in organizing the match.
CAF has launched an investigation into the incident and will refer the matter to the competent CAF bodies. The organization stated, “The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 qualifier fixture between Libya and Nigeria will not take place as scheduled tonight.”
This development has sparked reactions from various stakeholders, including Akpabio, who condemned Libya’s maltreatment of the Super Eagles, and the House of Representatives, which called for the Libyan Ambassador to be summoned for questioning.
