Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has spoken out after being left off the 2024 CAF Player of the Year shortlist, despite having an outstanding season in Europe.
The Bayer Leverkusen forward had a strong season, winning the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal, and finishing as a runner-up in the Europa League. He scored 21 goals, provided 10 assists, and played in 34 matches. Boniface's efforts earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award and a spot in the Team of the Season.
In response to his exclusion, Boniface shared his thoughts on social media, saying, "Rookie of the season, Team of the season. No worries, I didn’t play AFCON. Na why I dey wait for memes d’or."
Boniface missed the Africa Cup of Nations due to injury, and his omission has surprised many fans, considering his impressive performances last season.
