Bayern Munich has paid tribute to club legend Franz Beckenbauer by placing a massive replica of his iconic No. 5 jersey on the roof of the Allianz Arena.

The 15-meter by 10-meter jersey was installed ahead of the team's Champions League last-16 match against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday. This gesture honors Beckenbauer, who passed away in January 2024, and whose No. 5 jersey was retired by the club—the first time Bayern has ever retired a number.

Club president Herbert Hainer expressed pride in the tribute, saying, "We are delighted to honor Franz Beckenbauer in this way at the Allianz Arena."

Beckenbauer is widely regarded as one of football’s greatest players. During his time at Bayern, he won three European Cups, four German league titles, and two Ballon d’Or awards. He also captained West Germany to victory in the 1974 World Cup and later led the team to another World Cup win as coach in 1990.

Beyond his playing and coaching career, Beckenbauer was instrumental in the development of the Allianz Arena, which became Bayern’s home in 2005. In recognition of his legacy, the Munich City Council renamed the street where the stadium is located to "Franz Beckenbauer Platz" as of January 1, 2025. The stadium's official address is now No. 5, in tribute to his legendary jersey number.
