Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has recently come under scrutiny after being accused of showcasing a counterfeit Hermès bag. The allegations were raised by T20Luxury, an Italian luxury shopping brand, on their official Instagram page.
In a post shared on social media, AY displayed a Hermès designer bag, which he paired with a black leather jacket, white t-shirt, and pearl-studded grey jeans. However, T20Luxury criticized the comedian, stating that as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry and a beneficiary of genuine creativity, he should refrain from supporting the counterfeit fashion industry. They emphasized the importance of upholding authenticity to preserve his reputation as a leader within the Black community.
The accusation has sparked mixed reactions among fans and followers. Some suggest that AY may have been unaware of the bag’s authenticity, possibly due to being supplied a counterfeit item by a personal shopper. Others criticize Nigerian celebrities for allegedly endorsing fake designer products, arguing that such actions could negatively impact perceptions of Nigerians both domestically and internationally.
As of now, AY Makun has not publicly responded to the allegations regarding the authenticity of his Hermès bag.
