Nottingham Forest are hopeful that striker Taiwo Awoniyi will be ready for their upcoming match against Newcastle United this weekend.
Awoniyi missed Forest’s 2-1 loss to Fulham due to concussion protocols after suffering a head injury during the team's FA Cup victory over Exeter City. He also broke his nose in the collision and is currently being fitted for a protective mask to wear once cleared to play.
Due to concussion rules, Awoniyi is required to rest for 12 days before returning to action. However, head coach Nuno Espirito Santo remains optimistic about his availability for the trip to St James’ Park on Sunday.
“We didn’t receive the green light from the Premier League concerning the concussion protocols, so he couldn’t be in the squad,” Nuno explained. “He’s feeling fine, but we must follow the protocols. I hope he’ll be ready for the next match.”
Forest welcomed back Callum Hudson-Odoi during the Fulham game after the winger recovered from a groin injury that kept him out for three matches.
Meanwhile, reserve goalkeeper Carlos Miguel is sidelined with an injury sustained against Exeter, with Wayne Hennessey taking his spot on the bench.
The Reds are looking to bounce back after back-to-back away losses, struggling with defensive issues in the air as Emile Smith Rowe and Calvin Bassey scored headers against them.
