The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) has introduced the Trailblazer Award in memory of Herbert Wigwe, former CEO of Access Holdings PLC, who passed away on February 9, 2024.
Announced during the festival's opening night in Lagos, the award recognizes Nigerians excelling in creative fields, honoring Wigwe's arts legacy. AFRIFF founder Chioma Ude stated, "This award will recognize Nigerians excelling in creative fields, commemorating Herbert’s legacy in the arts."
Benedict Oramah, Afreximbank president, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu were the inaugural recipients. Sanwo-Olu praised Ude, saying, "I think I need to acknowledge Chioma especially. Chioma, you have been such a great inspiration to a lot of people." He commended her "tenacity, can-do spirit, resilience, and sheer commitment."
Notable attendees included comedian Bovi, former Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed, and Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy. On Monday, Nigerian-British actor John Boyega also received the Trailblazer Award for his contributions to the film industry.
