Feyenoord secured a spot in the Champions League last 16 after a 1-1 draw against 10-man AC Milan at San Siro on Tuesday, winning 2-1 on aggregate.
Julian Carranza scored the crucial equalizer in the 73rd minute with a powerful header, overturning Santiago Gimenez’s early goal for Milan. The Dutch side will now face either Inter Milan or Arsenal in the next round.
Carranza, who came on as a substitute, scored shortly after Theo Hernandez was sent off for Milan early in the second half. Hernandez received his second yellow card for diving in the penalty box under pressure from Givairo Read.
Before the red card, Milan had been in control, especially after Gimenez’s goal just 36 seconds into the match. The Mexican forward, who joined Milan from Feyenoord during the winter transfer window, scored his sixth Champions League goal of the season against his former team.
Milan, managed by Sergio Conceicao, are now at risk of missing out on next year’s Champions League. They currently sit seventh in Serie A, five points behind the top four with a game in hand.
