An 18-year-old Chinese footballer, Guo Jiaxuan, who was once a part of Bayern Munich’s World Squad, has reportedly been diagnosed with ‘brain death’ after an accident during a match in Spain.

Guo, a defender, was hit in the face by a knee during a training camp last Thursday. He was playing in a practice match against Spanish club RC Alcobendas at a camp organized by the Beijing Football Association.

His brother revealed on social media that Guo suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage—a type of stroke caused by bleeding on the brain—after the accidental collision.

According to his brother, doctors in Madrid have diagnosed him with ‘brain death.’ He wrote, “During training (last Thursday), he was rushed to [hospital] after being hit in the head by another player’s knee. From the interpreter, I learned that the doctor at the hospital said my brother had too much bleeding in his head and that there was little hope of survival… the hospital was going to remove his [life support] tubes.”

Guo’s father has refused the doctors’ advice to switch off his life support and conduct an autopsy. Instead, he is working on getting Guo moved back to China for further treatment.
