Former Super Eagles defender Taye Taiwo has been inducted into Olympique Marseille’s prestigious Club of Legends, earning recognition for his remarkable contributions to the French club.

Taiwo, now 39, played 271 matches for Marseille between 2005 and 2011, scoring 25 goals and providing 23 assists. His name now joins a list of club legends that includes Samir Nasri, Mamadou Niang, and Paulo Cezar.

Marseille celebrated his induction with a post on their official X account, stating, “Naija Represented. Taye Taiwo is in the house tonight as the former Olympien and Super Eagle is inducted into the #OMLegends club.”

Fans also took to social media to congratulate Taiwo. One user, @viralvideoxr, wrote, “What a fantastic honor for Taye Taiwo! His contributions to Marseille and the Super Eagles will always be remembered.”

Taiwo was a key player during his time at the club, helping Marseille win the Ligue 1 title, the League Cup, and the French Super Cup. Known for his powerful left-footed shots, he became a fan favorite at the Stade Vélodrome, with his free-kicks and long-range goals earning him legendary status.

He is one of only four Nigerians to have played for Marseille, alongside Wilson Oruma, Joseph Yobo, and Victor Agali. His impact extended to the national team, where he earned 54 caps for Nigeria and scored five goals between 2004 and 2011.

Taiwo left Marseille in 2011 to join AC Milan and later played for clubs across Europe, including Queens Park Rangers in the English Premier League. He retired from professional football in 2019 and has since been living in France.

His induction into Marseille’s Club of Legends cements his legacy as one of the most influential African players to wear the club’s iconic white jersey.
