On February 3, 2025, Nigerian author and social commentator Reno Omokri extended his congratulations to Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, for securing the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Grammy Awards.

In his Instagram post, Omokri lauded Tems for her pride in Nigeria and subtly criticized other artists, stating, “If only others can learn from you, they may have their own Grammy to boast of.” He further emphasized the importance of associating with national symbols, remarking, “To Win a Grammy As a Nigerian Artiste, Associate With a Nigerian Flag, Not The Flag of a Colonial Oppressor, Otherwise Your Ambition Will Be in Shambles!” These comments appeared to be directed at singer Davido, who displays the Belgian flag on his social media profiles.

Previously, in November 2024, Omokri had criticized Davido for negative remarks about Nigeria during a U.S. podcast appearance, accusing him of “ignorance and a deficiency in patriotism.”
