Bayer Leverkusen secured a 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim on Sunday, closing the gap to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to six points.

Nigerian forward Victor Boniface marked his return with a goal, just days after his proposed move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr fell through.

Boniface, sidelined since November with a thigh injury, was given a surprise start by coach Xabi Alonso. The 24-year-old wasted no time making an impact, firing home in the 15th minute after receiving a pass from Alex Grimaldo. Four minutes later, Jeremie Frimpong doubled Leverkusen’s lead with a well-placed shot.

Leverkusen thought they had a chance to extend their advantage when Nathan Tella was brought down in the box, but VAR overturned the penalty decision. In a Bundesliga first, the referee explained the call through stadium speakers as part of a new test initiative.

Boniface was substituted at halftime for Patrik Schick, who scored just six minutes after coming on, converting a rebound following good work by Aston Villa loanee Emi Buendia. Despite being reduced to 10 men after Grimaldo’s second yellow card, Leverkusen held on for the win despite a late goal from Hoffenheim’s Gift Orban.

Coach Xabi Alonso praised his team’s performance, saying, “It was important for Boni to feel part of the team again. Playing at home and receiving support from the fans will do him good.”
