The Nigerian government is proactively preparing to receive approximately 3,690 of its citizens who may face deportation from the United States. This development follows the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) listing Nigeria second among African nations, with only Somalia having more citizens slated for removal.
In response, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has established an inter-agency committee comprising the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to manage the potential repatriation. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM’s Director of Media and Corporate Affairs, confirmed that the committee is prepared to handle the return of affected individuals.
While NiDCOM has not yet received formal notification regarding the deportation of Nigerians, the government is taking proactive steps to ensure a smooth reintegration process for those affected. The situation remains dynamic, with both Nigerian and U.S. authorities engaged in diplomatic discussions to manage the potential repatriation effectively.
