David Coote, a Premier League referee, has been fired by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after an investigation into serious allegations. Coote has the right to appeal the decision.
In a statement on Monday titled “Statement—David Coote”, the PGMOL explained that Coote violated his employment contract, making it impossible for him to continue. The organization also expressed support for his welfare despite his dismissal.
The issues began in November when Coote was suspended after a video appeared online, allegedly showing him making negative comments about Liverpool and their former manager, Jürgen Klopp. The remarks reportedly referenced Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Burnley in 2020, where Klopp criticized Coote’s decisions.
Further controversy arose when The Sun reported on November 13 that Coote was seen using a white powder during the European Championship. UEFA also suspended him and started its own investigation.
In addition, the Football Association (FA) reopened a 2019 case where Coote was accused of discussing a yellow card decision before a Championship game between Leeds and West Brom. Coote denied the claim, calling it false and defamatory.
While PGMOL has completed its investigation and dismissed Coote, he denies any wrongdoing and may appeal. The case raises questions about the integrity of football officiating.
