For the first time in history, two Nigerian amateur golfers will take part in the Qatar Open Golf Championship in 2025. This is a huge moment for the country, as it marks a new chapter after years of challenges with Qatari authorities due to past incidents of players overstaying their visas.
Dr. Bob Olukoya has played a key role in making this happen. His work to rebuild trust has led to Nigeria being given two slots for the 39th edition of the tournament.
“We are gradually changing the narratives,” Olukoya said, highlighting how Nigeria is working hard to restore its image and showcase its talent.
The players who will fill these slots will be chosen through a qualifying tournament from January 24 to 26, 2025. The location for this event has not yet been announced. Amateur golfers from Nigeria and the diaspora will compete, with a handicap limit of 9 to meet the Qatar Open’s rules.
The stakes are high. Winning the Qatar Open not only brings prestige but also guarantees a spot in the Qatar Masters, part of the top-level DP World Tour.
Olukoya believes the selected players have what it takes to shine. “Nigerian amateur golfers, if selected on merit, are capable of competing and winning,” he said.
The golfing community in Nigeria is excited about this opportunity. Olajide Bolaji, technical director of the Nigeria Golf Federation, shared his enthusiasm. “This is awesome and good news for the Nigerian golfing community. Nigerian golfers can dominate the world if provided with participatory opportunities,” he said, promising full support for the qualifiers’ winners.
For Nigerian golfers, this moment is about more than just playing. It’s a chance to prove themselves, gain recognition, and show the world what they can achieve. The countdown to January 2025 has begun.
