Nigerian comedian Ali Baba shared a gripping story about his encounter with former military leader Sani Abacha during a recent episode of the Leadership Podcast. He recounted an event in Abuja where he was responsible for introducing the Akwa Ibom cultural group.
Ali Baba revealed, “My first close encounter with death was with Sani Abacha. When he was president, I boldly confronted him about wearing dark sunglasses while the performers were on stage. I said, ‘Your excellency, sir, it’s almost 10; why are you wearing shades? Don’t you want to see their performance? Take them off!’”
Much to his surprise, Abacha complied and engaged in conversation. However, as the cultural troupe began their performance, Ali Baba noticed DSS officers waiting backstage. In a moment of bravery, he sat beside Abacha, who jokingly asked why he wasn’t backstage. Ali Baba replied, “Don’t worry, sir, they can come and arrest me right here.” This fearless interaction highlights Ali Baba’s bold nature, even in potentially perilous situations.
