Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh has been killed in Tehran, according to the Palestinian militant group and Iranian state media. Hamas reported that Haniyeh died in an Israeli strike.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed to avenge Haniyeh's death, stating, “You killed our dear guest in our house and now have paved the way for your harsh punishment,” referring to Israel.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the US was “not aware of or involved in” Haniyeh's killing.
Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the assassination, although senior officials had previously vowed to eliminate Hamas in response to the group’s October 7 attack.
