Growing up, many of us couldn't help but be captivated by some of the melodies of the 80s and at the heart of it was an extraordinary talent, Onyeka Onwenu.

Saturdays were special, as her music dominated the airwaves on radios and TV, bringing to life that fun-filled spirit of the weekend.

In the nation's legacy list of pronounced and established singers, Onyeka Owenu was a rare gem. She was more than just a singer. She was a true talent, with a sound that was both raw and refined.

As we look back, it's clear that her presence and unforgettable songs left a mark that continues to inspire and intrigue.

Who is Onyeka Onwenu and where is she from?

Onyeka Onwenu hails from Arondizuogu, a small town in Ideato North, Imo State, southeastern Nigeria, but she was raised in Port Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers State, Nigeria. She is the youngest daughter of four siblings.

She was a singer and songwriter, who made her way into Nollywood, starring in some of the oldest and best movies in the 80s and 90s. 

Beyond the scope of music and acting Onyeka Onwenu had a niche for promoting the girl child, lending her voice to the feminist movement, making her one of the pioneers of the movement in Nigeria and West Africa at large. Her love and passion for peace exceeded even into the political landscape in the early 00s, and till now, is remembered as one of Nigeria's leading female activists.

Onyeka Owenu like other veterans, has made her mark on the industry's music export, and culture and delivered some of the best highlife sounds originating from Nigerian shores.

Her passion for music was seen during her career, running through decades of hits and grinds.

She comes off as one of the last 'pure breeds' promoting highlife sounds as a female singer, particularly in Nigeria. Her theme revolved around self-love, awareness, peace and courage.

During her time, she was also one of the first music stars to incorporate melodies from foreign elements such as Jazz, Soul into the Nigerian music sound.

On Tuesday, July 30th, 2024 Onyeka Oweun reportedly slumped after playing at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli and was pronounced dead at the Reddington Hospital, Lagos.
