Vinicius Junior secured a dramatic victory for Brazil with a stoppage-time goal, sealing a 2-1 win over Colombia in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday.
Brazil took an early lead in the sixth minute when Raphinha converted a penalty after Daniel Muñoz fouled Vinicius in the box. However, Colombia responded in the 41st minute when James Rodríguez set up Luis Díaz, who fired a low shot into the bottom corner to level the score.
Colombia dominated possession in the second half, creating several chances. Rodríguez had a promising opportunity in the 68th minute, but his shot was easily saved by Alisson Becker. The Brazilian goalkeeper later suffered a head injury in the 78th minute following a collision with Davinson Sánchez, forcing him to leave the pitch.
With extra time added due to Alisson’s injury, Brazil found their breakthrough. Vinicius Jr’s powerful shot deflected off a defender and into the net, securing three crucial points for the five-time world champions.
"Playing for Brazil is Unexplainable" – Vinicius Jr
After the match, Vinicius expressed his joy. "Today’s goal brings relief and happiness. Playing for the national team is something you can’t explain," he said.
The win keeps Brazil in second place in the CONMEBOL standings, four points behind Argentina, who play Uruguay on Friday. Meanwhile, Colombia remains in sixth place, still fighting for a qualification spot.
Colombia's coach, Néstor Lorenzo, was disappointed with the result. “We controlled the game and deserved more, but that’s football. I have doubts about some refereeing decisions, but I won’t comment,” he said.
